The film tells the story of a conservative Muslim father and his disobliging son who take a trip from France together, across Europe, on a pilgrimage to Mecca. The film, which has been internationally praised for its humanity and warmth, embraces the universal themes of generational and cultural difference, and features stunning footage of the pilgrimage at Mecca. It is a film less about religion and Islam and more about faith and humanity.
Le Grand Voyage won the Luigi de Laurentiis award for Best First Film at the Venice Film Festival in 2004.
