From Printers to Printing: Free Lyra Webcast Tracks Consumer Mind Shift - Webcast Examines how Consumers are Making Smarter Choices to Meet Unique Needs

Lyra Research's next Webcast on Wednesday, June 22, at 2 p.m. EDT will explore changes in consumer attitudes toward home printing options. "The Mind Shift from Printers to Printing" is presented by Larry Jamieson, director of Lyra's Hard Copy Industry Advisory Service (IAS), and moderated by Charles LeCompte, president of Lyra Research and director of the Digital Photography Advisory Service (DPS). The free Webcast at www.lyra.com has already drawn attention from key printer and supplies vendors and promises to provide insight and analysis of recent changes in the home printer market. Lyra's Webcasts offer imaging industry executives an accessible and informal resource for insight, useful data points, and valuable question-and-answer sessions on hot topics in the hard copy hardware and supplies industries.

About the Upcoming Webcast: The home printing market no longer involves simply hooking up a printer to a desktop PC. With the massive shift to laptops and wireless home networks that allow multiple users to share broadband Internet connections, savvy home consumers are looking at new ways to satisfy print requirements. Now that monochrome and color laser printers are less expensive, multifunction devices are widespread, and digital photography is growing in popularity, consumers are looking at many different options to meet their printing needs and are making smarter choices. This Webcast examines the results of Lyra's home user surveys and analyzes how the market has changed recently. Viewers will be able to participate in polls and a question-and-answer segment during the Webcast.

Topics discussed will include:

shifting patterns and surprising results in home printing;

the value proposition for consumers' next purchase;

what type of device consumers will purchase next;

color laser printers at home;

increased placements of home networks and their effect on printer purchases;

color workgroup MFPs hitting the market;

increasing competition: historical and future price and performance comparisons; and

which brands are penetrating the mainstream mindset?

The Webcast draws from Lyra's recent report, Consumer Printing Market: Forecasts, Geographic Trends, Competition, Major Events, and Shifts. This comprehensive report describes today's consumer printing market, including ink jet printers and MFPs, personal monochrome laser printers and MFPs, and color laser printers. The report examines how users' print requirements are changing and how new print requirements will drive new market opportunities for vendors. Part of Lyra's 2005 Imaging Symposium Series, this report is value-priced at $299, making it an accessible must-read for imaging industry vendors competing in this market space. Participants may register for the free Webcast at www.lyra.com.

Larry Jamieson says, "The increased sophistication of today's home computing environment has had a big impact on consumers' printer preferences. One size no longer fits all. Consumers are shopping based on their unique needs and environment. And the industry is responding with more targeted solutions such as photo printers and more dynamic offerings such as network-friendly MFPs." He adds, "I'm excited to discuss the effects of this mind shift in our upcoming Webcast. The change in attitudes has far-reaching effects throughout the digital imaging industry, and early registrations for this Webcast have validated the enthusiasm among vendors."... (Continue reading)

Two Moms are Fighting, and Winning the Battle against Illiteracy in America

Two moms teamed up five years ago, determined to get to the bottom of the reading problems that so many children and adults face and to then do something about it. Some reports state that as many as 72 million Americans cannot read or write above a 5th grade level, resulting in the U.S. government spending billions of dollars every year on supplemental education services with little to no progress being made.

As their research progressed, these moms discovered the National Reading Panel report, commissioned by Congress to determine the best reading methods possible. The Panel reported that systematic phonics, combined with comprehension, are two of the five key elements to properly teach phonics. Other "newer" ideas such as "whole language" and "sight word" are far less effective than good "old fashioned" phonics instruction.

Sue Moore, from Pennsylvania, and Holly Haggerty, from Florida, created a reading program based on the exact elements needed to create strong readers. It's called Smart Way Reading and Spelling" (www.smartwayreading.com). The program uses the most successful method of teaching available -- one-on-one instruction. And, the program is made simple enough to use that a child who can read at a 5th grade reading level can teach another to read!

This innovative system utilizes a patent-pending flip-chart system to give the reading coach the step-by-step lessons that can be used for beginner readers, as a remedial program and even English as a Second Language. Some reading instruction programs teach a child to read by learning songs and rhymes in front of the television or with games, but theres no scientific evidence to back up this approach....
