The Chicago School Introduces New Applied Psychology Programming for Working Professionals

The Chicago School of Professional Psychology announces a new lineup of executive education programming designed to help working professionals advance their careers, improve their performance, and help their organizations succeed through continuing professional development. As part of the nation’s largest nonprofit graduate school of psychology, Executive and Professional Education (EPE) at The Chicago School will feature certificate and degree programs designed for working adults, workshops, onsite training, and consulting services centered on psychology’s practical applications.

“For more than 25 years, we’ve trained students to apply psychology’s focus on motivation and human behavior to help people and organizations solve problems and maximize their potential,” said Dr. Michael Horowitz, president of The Chicago School. “EPE allows us to reach a new audience with this knowledge, the working professional. We want to expand the influence of psychology to the world. EPE allows us to accomplish this goal.”

With classes starting in fall 2006, Executive and Professional Education will eventually offer programming in seven areas:

ExCEL Track Master’s Program and Certificates in Industrial & Organizational Psychology

ExCEL Track Master’s Program and Certificates in Forensic Psychology

ExCEL Track Certificates in Applied Psychology

Corporate Ethics, Compliance, and Governance

Diversity, Multiculturalism, and Global Leadership

Leadership Development

Psychology Sub-specialty Certification, including BCBA

“This is an exciting new academic initiative for The Chicago School,” said Dr. Patricia Breen, vice president of EPE for The Chicago School. “For the degree and certificate programs, we’ve created a delivery structure that incorporates online with face-to-face learning for maximum accessibility for the working student. Additionally, we’ve adopted an instructional approach that capitalizes on students’ work experiences to extend and strengthen learning.”

Fall 2006 programming includes a post-master’s sub-specialty certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), which targets individuals already working with people with developmental disabilities such as autism and dementia. Course work also will benefit human service professionals seeking the Board Certified Behavior Analysis (BCBA) certification.

The school’s Leader Accelerator program also begins this fall. Here, individuals learn techniques to inspire others through targeted development of their own abilities in persuasion and strategic thinking, decision-making, organization, and leadership development customized for their particular workplace setting.

“We believe that because of psychology’s focus on people, no other discipline has greater potential to bolster leadership skills,” said Dr. Michael Barr, director of corporate education and consulting services for The Chicago School. “We’re very excited about Leader Accelerator. 6da It promises to be a very engaging program where we encourage participants to bring their actual workplace problems to class and we develop strategies to solve them. We believe it delivers an immediate return on investment.”

Rounding out EPE’s fall 2006 programming will be two workshops: one focused on the areas of business ethics training, compliance, and governance and the other on diversity, multiculturalism, and global leadership development.

Taking place in October, Beyond Compliance: Building Ethical Organizations is a two-day session designed to help leaders, senior managers, and executives build a stronger culture of ethical behavior and decision making in a global marketplace.

“This past decade has been a tumultuous era which has demanded far greater corporate accountability,” said Dr. Breen. “We believe that building an ethical organization goes beyond just knowledge of regulations and policing compliance with them. Our expertise in human behavior and decision making gives us the unique ability to help organizations create the climate of integrity that assures ethical behavior from the policy level to each individual within that organization’s field operations.”

Building Ethical Organizations will feature a presentation by Dr. Al Gini, author of Why It's Hard To Be Good. Dr. Gini also is the co-founder and associate editor of Business Ethics Quart 1f40 erly, the Journal of the Society for Business Ethics, and can be regularly heard on National Public Radio’s Chicago affiliate, WBEZ-FM.

The second workshop, Bridging Cultural Differences: Managing, Negotiating, Communicating, and Managing Globally, will help organizations build stronger, more productive relationships with international vendors, partners, and multicultural workforces.

The two-day seminar will include a presentation by Rochelle Kopp, managing principal, North America, for Japan Intercultural Consulting. Kopp is the author of The Rice-Paper Ceiling: Breaking Through Japanese Corporate Culture and over a dozen books in Japanese. She also writes articles for various Japanese and American publications, including regular columns for the Nihon Keizai Shimbun.

“Multicultural training and advocacy has been a central part of our mission for more than 25 years,” said Dr. Barr. “We have the expertise to help organizations better negotiate, communicate, and manage globally.”

The Chicago School has received national recognition in the area of cultural diversity education by the National Council for Schools of Professional Psychology.

New EPE offerings will continue in 2007 with the launch of the school’s blended and accelerated versions of our existing successful master’s degree programs. Called “ExCEL” tracks, these degree programs enable working students to develop and apply knowledge and skills from the Chicago School’s traditional fields of Industrial & Organizational Psychology, Forensic Psychology, and Applied Psychology to strengthen their effectiveness in their current profession.

“We’ve designed the ExCEL track master’s programs offered through Executive and Professional Education to be completed in approximately 20 months,” said Dr. Breen. “Additionally, ExCEL tracks will have a certificate option for students who just want to take the specialized courses.”

Coming in January 2007, The Chicago School’s ExCEL track of the M.A. in Industrial & Organizational Psychology is designed specifically for experienced professionals in fields such as human resources, private and public sector management, healthcare administration, merchandising, and customer service. The professional development program offers four concentrations: consumer psychology, leadership development for healthcare professionals, organizational/leadership effectiveness, and workplace diversity training. These concentrations—consisting of three, eight-week online graduate courses—can be taken on their own to earn a Certificate.

It will be joined by the school’s new accelerated master’s ExCEL track within its Forensic Psychology program, a branch of psychology that focuses on the law and the legal system. The only program of its kind in the Midwest, the Forensic Psychology M.A. ExCEL track is geared towards nontraditional students currently employed in, or who would benefit from, forensic psychology skills in such areas as child advocacy, court services, jails and prisons, law enforcement agencies, probation services, protective services, and violence risk assessment.

Pending appropriate approvals, fall 2007 will see the addition of an accelerated master’s degree in Applied Psychology with concentrations and certificates in child psychology, adolescent psychology, geriatric psychology, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), sports/exercise psychology, education measurement, and workplace diversity training. This program is designed for professionals such as teachers, therapists, personal trainers, guidance counselors, education administrators, social workers, and others who seek psychology training to help people, better understand human behavior, and advance their careers through continuing professional education.

Each new degree program is subject to approval by the Illinois Board of Higher Education and the Higher Learning Commission North Central Association.

In addition to courses and workshops, EPE leadership development programs can be customized for one-on-one training sessions with organizations. Past and current training and consulting clients include First American Bank, The United States Navy, Fleet & Family Services, Coca Cola Enterprises, The University of Illinois at Chicago, The John Marshall Law School, the Chicago Bar Foundation, the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Winning Workplaces, Harrington College of Design, and Interfaith Refugee and Immigrations Services.

“For years The Chicago School has been helping organizations augment their training and development capabilities,” said Dr. Barr. “Thanks to EPE, we have the resources to help more companies and nonprofits than ever before. Organizations are people and we know people.”

"If the relationship has fundamental problems such as controlling behavior, those kinds of gifts usually don't help much," says Dr. Wasson. Deeper issues that can lead to marriage separation and divorce need to be faced before holiday presents make much impact.... (Continue reading)

"It's impossible to make a marriage or other committed relationship work out when both partners drag along excess emotional baggage left over from prior romantic relationships," says relationship expert, Russell Friedman, co-author of Moving On -- Dump Your Relationship Baggage and Make Room for the Love of Your Life."

"The divorce rate hovers at 50%, which is unconscionably high.
